Connecting a dedicated external BRAVIA CAM allows you to enjoy Video Chat or use Gesture Control to control your TV without using the remote control. This page will answer frequently asked questions about using the BRAVIA CAM.
Notes:
- BRAVIA CAM CMU-BC1 is an optional accessory product. The BRAVIA CAM CMU-BC1M is only included with limited model TVs such as the Z9K or A95K series.
- For 2022 TV models: The Gesture Control feature will be available after a software update.

What is the difference between the BRAVIA CAM and other cameras?
The BRAVIA CAM supports not only Video chat but also Sony's original sensing feature.
How many cameras can be connected to the TV?
BRAVIA TVs support only one camera connection.
Preparation/Initial Settings
Where should the BRAVIA CAM be attached?
To fully utilize the camera's functions, attach the camera to the center of the top of the TV. Peel off the protection film on the front of the camera before use. If you do not remove this film, camera performance will deteriorate.
Note: If your BRVIA CAM is the included camera (CMU-BC1M), please refer to the Setup Guide for how to attach it to your TV.
How to adjust the shooting range of the BRAVIA CAM?
The vertical angle of view can be adjusted by changing the camera tilt. The horizontal angle can not be adjusted.
How do I use the Camera cover switch?
It can be used for closing or opening the shutter by sliding the Camera cover switch. When you use the camera function, please open the shutter.
Do I need to change the BRAVIA CAM settings when I connect it to the TV?
You can use the Camera sensing functions without changing any settings. If you want to change the settings, such as turning off the BRAVIA CAM lamp, on the remote control press the Quick Settings ( or ) button → select Settings → Remotes and accessories → BRAVIA CAM.

What is the sensing range of BRAVIA CAM?
BRAVIA CAM senses a range of about 7m.
The distance from the TV recognized by the camera sensing function is not accurate.
The TV may not be detected or have some error due to the camera angle or position of people between the TV and the camera. Please try to change the camera angle or position to get a more accurate result.
An object other than people (photo, doll, animal, etc.) is being recognized as people and the camera sensing function is activated.
If an object looks like people or a face (like a photo, doll, or animal) there is the possibility it will be recognized as people. Move those things out of the camera's sight when using a camera sensing function.
When I turn off a camera sensing function, such as Auto adjust Picture & Sound setting, a restart message is displayed.
A BRAVIA AM restart is required to temporarily power off the camera when a camera sensing function is turned off. The camera sensing function will be unavailable for a while, but it will be restored. There is no change in the setting value.
Note: The same restart message appears when any of the camera sensing functions are turned off.
Auto adjust Picture & Sound
Notes:
- Not all TV models support the Auto adjust picture & sound feature. If your BRAVIA TV supports this feature, Auto adjust with camera, Auto adjust Picture & Sound or Auto adjust according to viewing position is displayed in the Quick settings or Picture settings as shown below:
- On the remote control, press the Quick Settings ( or ) button.

- You can find Auto adjust Picture & Sound or Auto adjust according to viewing position.
- Select Picture settings → Auto adjust with camera.
- Select Settings → Display & Sound → Picture → Auto adjust Picture & Sound.

Where is the camera setting for Auto adjust picture & sound?
For the steps, refer to the Notes at the beginning of the Auto adjust Picture & Sound section.
Is it possible to set how the Auto adjust Picture & Sound function recognizes people?
You can do this from the Auto adjust Picture & Sound settings:
- On the remote control, press the Quick Settings ( or ) button on the remote control.
- The next steps will depend on your TV menu options:
- Select Settings → Remotes and accessories → BRAVIA CAM → Auto adjust picture and sound.
- Select Settings → Display & Sound → AmbientOptimization Pro → Auto adjust with camera : On → Auto adjust according to viewing position.
- Select Settings → Display & Sound → AmbientOptimization Pro → Auto adjust according to viewing position : On → Advanced settings.
- Select Settings → Display & Sound → Picture → Auto adjust Picture & Sound.
- Select Picture settings → Auto adjust Picture & Sound.
Auto adjust Picture & Sound sometimes doesn't work
- This feature adjusts the picture and sound by detecting the positions of people who are stationary. It doesn't work while people are moving.
- Depending on the environment (such as too dark), this feature may not be able to detect people or work correctly.
Picture/Sound setting (Brightness, Voice emphasis, Balance) can't be changed after disabling camera feature
If the camera is disconnected or the camera cover switch is closed while the Auto adjust Picture & Sound setting is ON, the Brightness, Voice emphasis, and Balance get disabled. Please turn off the Auto adjust with camera, Auto adjust Picture & Sound or Auto adjust according to viewing position:
- On the remote control, press the Quick Settings ( or ) button.
- The next steps will depend on your TV menu options:
- Select Auto adjust according to viewing position or Auto adjust Picture & Sound.
- Select Picture settings → Auto adjust with camera or Auto adjust Picture & Sound.
After using the Auto adjust Picture & Sound option, the set value does not return to what it was before using that option.
After Auto adjust Picture & Sound is turned off, the value will remain unchanged. If you want to restore the original values, make a note of the settings in advance and restore them manually.

Precautions when using Calman for BRAVIA and Auto Adjust Picture & Sound at the same time
IMPORTANT: This information does not apply to the A95L series and TV models from 2024 onwards.
- When Auto Adjust Picture & Sound is enabled, Brightness will be among the values adjusted by Calman.
- After Auto Adjust Picture & Sound is turned off, the value will remain unchanged.
- If you wish to restore the original value, make a note of the setting value in advance and restore it manually after Auto Adjust Picture & Sound is turned off.

Can I adjust the Soundbar sound by using Auto adjust Picture & Sound?
The Auto adjust Picture & Sound feature is supported only by the TV speaker. Please switch Speakers in the Audio output settings on the TV to TV speakers. On the remote control, press the Quick Settings ( or ) button, and select Settings → Display & Sound → Audio output → Speakers → TV speakers.
Gesture Control
- If your BRAVIA TV supports the Gesture Control function, Gesture Control is displayed in the BRAVIA CAM settings. On the remote control, press the Quick Settings ( or ) button, and select Settings → System → Gesture Control.
- For 2022 TV models: The camera sensing functions will be available after a software update.

Are the gestures the only ones I learned in the tutorial?
You can check the gesture type from the following settings:
On the remote control, press the Quick Settings ( or ) button, and select Settings → System → Gesture Control → Gesture controls.
Gestures may not be recognized in the following circumstances:
- If the Camera cover switch is not open.
- If you perform gestures too close or too far from the camera.
- When your hand is too close to your body or face it may not be recognized as a gesture. Please refer to the tutorial.
- If your hand movements are too fast or too exaggerated to be recognized. Try slowly moving your hand with smaller motions.
- If you block the camera's field of view.
- If the environment is too bright, the background colors are too similar, or there is an optically confusing pattern on your clothes.
- If your face and body cannot be seen or recognized by the camera.
- If the sensing function sees the movement of another nearby object, that object may be given preference over your gestures.
- If your gestures are not recognized even after trying everything, try unplugging and plugging in the camera.
Gestures can be detected by unintentional action:
- A Gesture may be detected when you move your hand or arm similar to a Gesture action within the camera's line of sight.
- The camera may also recognize your foot as a hand if, for example, you lie down and your foot comes within the camera's field of view.
- If the camera frequently and incorrectly recognizes a movement as a Gesture, stop that posture or movement, or turn the gesture function off temporarily.
Proximity Alert
- The camera sensing functions will be available after a software update.
- If your BRAVIA TV supports the Proximity Alert function, Proximity Alert is displayed in the BRAVIA CAM settings. On the remote control, press the Quick Settings ( or ) button, and select Settings → Remotes and accessories → RAVIA CAM → Proximity Alert.

The distance to launch the Proximity Alert is not accurate or the Proximity Alert doesn't work according to the distance
- There may be an error when there are differences, such as brightness and layout, between when the settings were first made and the time of use.
- Proximity Alert doesn't work well if the subject is too close to the camera.
- Proximity Alert doesn't work when a person is not facing the front of the camera.
Video Chat
When using the Video Chat application with BRAVIA CAM, no image is displayed and only the audio is output.
The shutter might be closed. Please open the shutter by the Camera cover switch.
Your video image is displayed to the other party is displayed, but it is not actually displayed.
The shutter of BRAVIA CAM may be closed. Please check if the shutter is open.
Note: Since the shutter status of the BRAVIA CAM is implemented by Sony's original Protocol, a 3rd party's video chat apps cannot detect the camera's shutter state (open or closed).
The BRAVIA CAM may not be accessible after turning the TV OFF and ON with the remote control while using the Video Chat app on the camera.
Close the Video Chat app, wait about 20-30 seconds, then open the app again and the issue will be resolved.
The BRAVIA CAM stops working after I close and open the camera cover during a call while using the Video Chat app.
Use the TV remote control to turn the TV off and on and the symptom will be resolved.
LED
What is the white LED indicator on the BRAVIA CAM and when does it come on?
- The LED indicator will turn on during a video chat and when camera sensing functions are working.
- For camera sensing functions, you can turn off the LED indicator by following these steps: On the remote control, press the Quick Settings ( or ) button, and select Settings → Remote and accessories → ACCESSORY CAMERA "BRAVIA CAM" → Camera activity LED.
Note: Information from the camera sensing functions is not transmitted outside of the TV.
The camera LED indicator is lit even though the shutter has closed.
The LED indicator is lit because the TV recognizes the BRAVIA CAM. If the shutter has closed, the camera has not detected any sensing information.
Notes:
- You can turn off the LED indicator by following these steps: On the remote control, press the Quick Settings ( or ) button, and select Settings → Remote and accessories → BRAVIA CAM or ACCESSORY CAMERA "BRAVIA CAM" → Camera activity LED → Off.
- When this setting is turned off, the LED only lights when the BRAVIA CAM is with the Video chat application.
- The LED may light up during software updates as well as when recognizing the camera.
Screen and Picture quality
The camera image is flashing (hunting) when shooting with a camera connected to the TV. (eg. preview/selfie application etc.)
There are some circumstances when flashing (hunting) will occur in a dark room. Brighten the surroundings to avoid this issue.
The camera image has white noise while shooting.
In dark conditions, the presence of white noise on the image will be increased. Brighten the surroundings to reduce the white noise.
The camera image has a flicker.
The BRAVIA CAM has an auto anti-flicker function but it may not be working. Clear the camera settings by following these steps: On the remote control, press the Quick Settings ( or ) button, and select Settings → Remote and accessories → ACCESSORY CAMERA "BRAVIA CAM" → Clear Data.
Software update
The BRAVIA CAM update fails
- Check the connection between the TV and the BRAVIA CAM to make sure it is the proper connection for the camera and is not loose. Use a USB cable for the optional camera, or the touchpoint of the included Magnetic Camera)
- Use the remote control to turn off the TV, disconnect and reconnect BRAVIA CAM, and then try the update again.
- Do not remove the BRAVIA CAM during the camera update.
After removing and inserting BRAVIA CAM during a camera update, BRAVIA CAM does not respond.
When the camera is removed it becomes temporarily unrecognized by the TV. Reboot the TV by turning t off and back on and the issue will be resolved. To avoid this and other issues in the future, do not remove the BRAVIA CAM during a camera update.
Others
The BRAVIA CAM attached to the top center of the TV is getting warm.
Depending on the conditions, the BRAVIA CAM can become warm. This should be no problem during normal operations.
When should I use Clear data in the BRAVIA CAM settings?
The Clear data function will erase the sensing information collected by the BRAVIA CAM and stop and initialize all camera sensing functions. Use this function when you want to return all camera sensing functions to their initial state at the time of purchase.
