Great sound quality but poor call quality in noisy

Overall, I am very happy with the sound signature and quality, it has the best noise cancellation technology in the market now. The battery life is fantastic, I do not have to worry that it will run out of juice. Multiple devices connection is very important for work and play. Quick attention and Speak-to-Chat is very useful so I can talk to someone without removing my headphone. Adaptive Sound Control is very useful, it senses what you are doing and adjust the ambient sound accordingly. I did not give it a 5 stars because of the Call Quality. In a quiet environment, call quality is good. But in a noisy environment, my friends/colleague complain that they cannot hear me over Skype, Microsoft Team conference call. It is especially bad if you have a fan beside you. It is almost unusable. I hope Sony can fix the call quality with a firmware update. Then they will beat Bose in this area and becomes the King!

Like many others, I only write reviews when I am very happy with a product or extremely unhappy, sadly this is the latter. I purchased my WH-1000XM4 having read numerous reviews on how good the WH-1000XM4 are. Undeniably the sound quality and noise cancellation are superb. I mainly use the headphones in the office, commuting and on long haul travel, the WH-1000XM4 were ideal for this. So why the one-star review when other reviews rave about these headphones, and they win so many awards? Simple, they don't last. All the reviews and comparisons are with new headphones. After about a year and a half (outside the warranty period) the headphones developed a fault, they wouldn't reliably charge, the battery level would get stuck at 10% and when plugged in to charge the charging wouldn't activate. After a few months of struggling with this I decided to get them repaired at Sony. Having sent them in I was informed that the part required to correct this problem wasn't available, however, I could purchase a replacement pair at a discount, which I did. I have since discovered that the charging issue is a common problem, a quick internet search for "Sony WH-1000MX4 Not Charging" will bring up numerous blogs and articles describing exactly the same issue, generally after about 15 to 18 months, there are various button pressing resets that are suggested and these work for a while. But this is a fundamental flaw. For a "premium" product the components are just not adequate, and Sony does not appear to be able to source replacements. I would strongly urge anyone considering purchasing these to research how many of the glowing reviewers are still happy with the WH-1000XM4 after 18 months. If the discounted replacement pair worked, I wouldn't have written this review either but sadly after six months and very little use, this pair stopped working. Having been informed by Sony Customer Support that the replacement pair came with a 12-month warranty I wasn't too concerned. However, the Sony Customer Support have been nothing short of utterly woeful in resolving this. I have never had such a poor response from a major brand. I've purchased numerous Sony products over the past 30 years, from Walkmans, TVs, stereos and probably every model of Playstation and I have never once needed to contact customer support. After my recent experience with Sony Customer Support, the WH-1000XM4 will be my last purchase from Sony.

Bought these for the 2nd time. Also have the buds. They are for different usage scenarios. I honestly found the xm5s to be lighter and more comfortable but did not think they gripped as well. There was a lot of movement when moving my head. I am not and audiophile so for me there was not enough of a difference or in fact a substantial notable difference. Also for me the killer feature is them folding into their case, especially for travelling where they get used most. I spent about an hour trying on both these and the new 5s, although heavier (by no means uncomfortable.) (Just used them to Las Vegas and back) With no issues regarding long term wear. I also think they feel structurally stronger than the 5s. Again ideal for travelling or hangng around neck. Totally recommend!!

I bought these headphones to replace a pair of hesh ones that I just wore out! I feel these Sony ones aren't as good as the hesh ones sound quality wise but they definitely have superior noise cancelling. I do like the app where you can easily adjust the sound of the headphones. I feel overall these offer good value for money (bought in a sale) but I think you could do better sound quality wise for the money.

Great quality both in sound and comfort. Additional benefits when linked to the SONY app. Love the features of sound stops once headphones removed during listening. Placing palm of hand flat covering right hand speaker housing automatically mutes sound in order to have a conversation without removing headphones entirely. Was looking at higher named brands with prices to match. These were best for your money, more features and £100. Cheaper. Very satisfying !

I was torn on whether invest on these headphones or stick to cheaper ones, however I am glad I decided to go for these ones. The set up on my devices was easy and without fuss, the noise cancellation is great, they are quite comfortable around the ears however if you have not worn headphones for a long time like me, it might hurt your head, it’s a bit uncomfortable but definitely not unbearable. Highly recommend them.

Item was received today, so first impressions only. Very comfortable head-fitting, firm enough at least for sedentary use. Very soft earpad, so fitted easily over my spectacles, and over my behind-the-ear hearing aids. Easy pairing with Samsung tablet Galaxy Tab A8 running Android version 14. The sound (classical, and pop/folk) was fantastic, but bear in mind that I am elderly with limited sound frequency range. I didn't notice any sound lag when watching videos, with my tablet a few feet away.

I bought these on November 28 2023 and they broke within 11 months. I do not use them daily but very often for my adhd to complete work. I chose them for the noise cancelling feature as it was highly rated. I did like the sound quality and noise cancelling aspect. However, the leather started to crack, and I only use these for computer work. After 11 months this is appalling. The earpiece comes out of the socket displays the cheap product Sony scams you with. Sony claims it cost $100 or half of the cost to fix this. For the price I paid, it should be better quality. I would recommend the sound but what does that matter if the mode of use is poor quality.

I bought it encouraged by how useful is speak detection in sony ear plugs. Very conveniently detecting conversation, pausing playback and switch to transparent mode (mics pass through) for set time. It later restore previous mode and resume playback automagically. I wish transparent mode could be improved as it’s not as good as airpods pro.

Build quality is what I expected at this price, well finished and sturdy. Fit is excellent and they look good. Sound quality is very dependant on the device you use them with, I think it’s disingenuous of Sony to not make this clear in the spec, only Sony and Samsung phones can stream to these headphones in LDAC (the best wireless connection) and Apple doesn’t support LDAC. So, if you plan to use these with an iPhone or iPad you will be limited to AAC which sounds awful in my opinion, certainly night and day difference between AAC and LDAC. If you have a Sony or Samsung phone I’d recommend these headphones, I’m not blown away by them based on years of listening to good quality wired headphones, but I can safely say they provide the best wireless music experience I’ve had.

When I first purchased my headphones, I struggled at first to control the volume and backwards and forward direction features, which are the basic expectations around control operability. I was initially frustrated and considered returning the headphones, but I managed to work out that you simply stroke upwards/downwards for volume control. Stroke up or down and keep your finger pressed to achieve your desired volume. Stroke left or right to skip forward/backward. The feature where you cover the earpiece with your hand when having a conversation with someone in the room is clever because the music lowers and the headphones allow the outside in. You can also tap to start and stop your music listening or movie watching. When the headphones detect that they're not on your head, it pauses media content. Clever. All functionality is on the right-hand side earpiece. The quality of the material on the earpiece is durable, unlike my old Beats headphones which were poor quality and looked tatty, which is a pity because they sounded good. Sony has ticked all my expectations when it comes to producing quality headphones which use intelligent technology. Great value for money!

I have been using this for more than a week now. Overall, I have had a good experience. The sound quality is great, and they are very comfortable. The only negative I have is about Bluetooth pairing. Even after it says 'your Bluetooth is connected,' it still takes a few more seconds to actually connect to devices. If you play something immediately after it says it's connected, you won't hear the sound on the XM4; it will only play on the other device. It takes around 10 seconds for the audio to transfer to the XM4.

Bought these 18 months ago and they suddenly stopped charging after 14 months (tried different cables / chargers etc) Been battling Sony for a repair since. They were advertised with a two year warranty which I had to register and didn’t so they have refused repair despite this being a substandard product. Whilst they worked the sound quality and NC was easily better than the other popular brand that rhymes with rose that I’d had before. Shame they weren’t up to the build quality of that other brand…..

At first I was a bit hesitant due to the size description, but the headphones are super light-weight. I check the battery percentage regularly as I use these at least 4 hours a day but have found they only need charging once a week. To add, there is an adapter in case it runs out of charge whilst you're out of the house. Noise cancelling function is great but I have noticed that the ambient sounds selection can be a bit temprimental. I'm hoping the quality remains high with time but will have to wait and see; they have served me very well for the first month at least.

Bought this headphones about a month ago. I was hoping to but ULT wear but then decided to go with MX4 as it is more feature enriched and a premium choice from the two of them. But personally I feel the qpp experience can be enriched more for smoother use. The widget of the app should have the ability to change the headphones from ambient to noise cancelling mode. Moreover the custom button is not actually a custom button rather a series of choices. The user should be given more control on the custom button features. Overall the build quality and sound quality is great. But as a product of premium segment care should be given to software along with the hardware of the product.

Yet another awesome headphones made by Sony and definitely worth the buy for those wanting a noise cancelled audio headset. However won't recommend this if you are looking to use this for talking as the microphone quality is very average. I you made calls and if you were in a surrounding with any noise, chances of being heard is minimal and everything around you is very high. I also feel the head band is a tad too tight and chances are it may end up breaking in a year or two.

I bought these $300 headphones about a year ago. the use was anywhere from light to medium use. I didn't use these at the gym, just around the house or on walks around my neighborhood and that was really it. the headphones won't turn on. I registered them to avoid this and no help on Sony's end. I may take it to an electronics store. but other than that $300 in one year not worth the money. i loved them but to not work this soon, it's dissappointing.

The only reason I gave it 4 star instead of 5 in design is because the earhead is slightly larger than my ear so If I use it for longer time the neck area below the ear starts to become sore..... Other than that to problem everything about it is great the NC, bass, the ambient sound, 360 audio.

I love the sound and I appreciate that only uses 3.5mm jacks for it's wire. My work pc doesn't allow bluetooth connections so being able to use audio jacks is important to me. The sound is great and it is very convenient to use, especially when connected to 2 devices.

The headphones was a gift - I am so happy to be able to use it during my 15 hours long haul flights. It cancelled out the noise of the plane so well. When I had to charged the headphones becos battery was low the headphones from the airline cannot compare at all even though it supposedly had noise cancelling features. The product finishing is lovely. It was also comfortable as I had it on throughout the flight duration.

The XM4s are a fantastic product. I've had them for a few weeks and find myself reaching for them more often than my other headphones. Their convenience and features make them my go-to headphones. However, some of my other cans give a bit more regarding sound quality, like the Hifiman HE-R9 and Hifiman Deva Pro with the Hifiman Bluemini DAC. The convenience of the XM4, especially within an Apple ecosystem, is unbeatable. The only issue I have is the product registration for the extended warranty and use of some of the features in the Sound Connect (nee Headphones Connect). This is very frustrating since I really want to avail of the extended warranty and the app's personalization feature. Ironically, Sony makes it difficult to register the product but has easily contacted me to write a review. Please fix this, Sony. You could've gotten five stars.

The noise cancelling and sound quality is better than my husbands bose headphones. They look great and the additional lead for the airplane was a big help when travelling recently. I would give 5 stars but for the fact after almost a year of owning them I have had to do a reset on 2 occasions as they would not turn on when charged which is a concern for me.

I bought these to replace my ageing Bose Quietcomfort headphones which had stopped working and after a brief learning curve mastering the controls I've been delighted with the sound quality and comfort to date.
